Piriformis muscle syndrome can cause pain, tingling and numbness in the buttocks and also possibly the thigh. It is caused by the piriformis muscle, a flat muscle along the pelvis, irritating the sciatic nerve, which runs through it. It can be caused by anatomical variation, or by overuse or strain.
